Uganda, Kampala–This weekend, all roads lead to the
Western Uganda district of Mbarara for the national finals of the Airtel Rising
Stars championships 2015.
The teams that will take part in the finals
have been drawn from the
regional games that were played in Kampala, Masaka, Masindi, Mbale and Gulu.
The Airtel Rising Stars initiative,
the biggest Under-17 grassroots tournament on the African continent, aims at
identifying talent and nurturing upcoming footballers. This is one of the few
football equal opportunity initiatives that targets boys and girls.
Over the years, the Airtel Rising
Stars initiative has yielded many success stories and has enabled several
upcoming soccer talents to join Africa Premier League clubs and their
countries’ national teams.
The selected players get an
opportunity to get the best-in-class sports training, during residential
clinics that have over the years, been held by some of Arsenal FC’s legends. Airtel
has played a major role in the nurturing of remarkable talents and in Rwanda
there is an abundance of talent that is waiting to be nurtured.
Commenting about the finals, Airtel Uganda
Brands Assets and Properties’ Manager Noela Byuma encouraged football fans from
all over the country to come and watch the best youth teams showcasing their
talent in Mbarara.
“We have always been, and will
always be a brand that gives back to the communities in which we operate. ARS empowers
the youth by providing them with an opportunity to train in FUFA camps, gauge
their soccer skills by competing with their age mates from different parts of
the country, and stand a chance to be scouted to play club football,” she said.
Airtel, currently the largest
supporter of youth football on the continent, has partnered with FUFA to ensure
that football regulations are followed.
